I don’t know anyone who goes hunting specifically for Badgers. That being said, it’s always in the back of my mind when I hit areas that are infested with Ground Squirrels. But I never leave the house in the morning after telling my wife, “Wife. I’m going Badger hunting!” I would probably find my reloading room covered in a nice padded rubber coating on my return. This was another one of those times. We were going out hunting for Ground Squirrel, but this time the Remington 591 made for a different result than normal! I’m getting ahead of myself. Let me start from the beginning…
Last night I had decided that my wife, daughter and I were not going up to Tejon Ranch today.

As many of you read and saw recently, I used my 23″ Thompson Contender Carbine for a couple of months on Ground Squirrels here in California and did a pretty thorough write-up. Although some of the squirrels I shot were pretty large, I was really looking for larger varmints to put the T/C and Centurion ammo to the test.

I got up at 4:00am this morning so I could get up to an area that is legal to shoot the 5mm Rimfire at Ground Squirrels. Most shots were within 75 yards and I only missed twice! I was using the Centurion Varmint ammunition in my Remington Model 591. As you can tell by the pictures and the short video, the 5mm Rimfire does a good job knocking out varmints of all sizes. Some of the larger Ground Squirrels were almost torn in half!

Here’s a hunt report from this past weekend’s Rabbit Hunt put-together by one of the guy’s on a California shooting board I frequent:
I headed out early to miss Los Angeles traffic and wanted to get to the hunting area with time to spare for sighting-in and hunting some Cottontail and Black-tail Jackrabbits. I was packing only rimfires, with two Remington 591′s and a Ruger 17HMR. I was eager to shoot some rabbits with the 5mm rimfire, because it had been a long-time since I had gone hunting for bigger varmints with the 5.

As most of you know, a few of us 5mmForums members have purchased the Thompson Contender 23″ Carbine barrel in 5mm Remington Rimfire Magnum. I posted an initial report when I received mine back in January (click here for that story). I got a chance to hunt with the rifle a few times with the Centurion ammunition after I purchased it. But, I did not have any close places to hunt where lead ammunition was legal here in California. That made it very difficult to do a series of hunts to develop an informative hunt report. Beginning about a month ago, I was able to hunt with the 5mm Contender quite frequently. Even allowing me to get some video of how this rifle and ammo combination performs on ground squirrels.

If you are a regular visitor to the rimfire forums available on the internet, then you have probably seen the posts asking about Remington’s 5mm Rimfire Magnum. Even now, 30+ years after the Remington 591 & 592 rifles were discontinued, folks are still fans of this caliber.

The Centurion 5mm Remington Rimfire Magnum
“Do you know this cartridge?”
Such was the question that came up during a congenial dinner during the 2004 SHOT Show with our friends at Aguila Ammunition and Centurion Ordnance. Efrain Peralta, the Chief Engineer for Aguila Ammunition, then held out a note book to writer Tim Mancillas and I, depicting a perfectly hand drawn blueprint of the long discontinued 5mm Remington Rimfire Magnum cartridge.

Fresh cool air, still moist from the thunderstorm yesterday flowed through the cab of my Explorer as I sat along side the county road in South Eastern Wyoming. Glassing the prairie through the 10x Bushnell binoculars showed a scene that I had been waiting for a number of years.
